Laura Sunstein Murphy started practicing law in 1989. She worked for many years in large law firms in Philadelphia, Chester County, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware, before setting up a boutique practice in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 2003. She joined the Ezold Law Firm as of counsel in the fall of 2010.
Ms. Murphy advises small business and health care provider clients on the transactional aspects of their businesses, in areas ranging from forming LLCs, PCs and C corporations, business start ups, structuring business relationships to comply with federal and state health care program anti-referral laws including the Anti-Kickback Statute and the so-called "Stark" law, buy-ins and buy-outs, space and equipment leases, ambulatory surgery centers, medical staff issues, peer review, credentialing, billing, reimbursement, third-party payor agreement negotiation, quality of care, teleradiology, employee and independent contractor agreements, shareholder agreements, restrictive covenant enforceability, confidentiality, and HIPAA.
Before pursuing her legal career, Ms. Murphy taught Latin and French and later maintained a private psychotherapy practice. Ms. Murphy received a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies (Latin) from the University of Pennsylvania; a Master of Arts in French literature from Villanova University; and a Ph.D. in Psychoanalytic Psychology from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ms. Murphy graduated from the Villanova University School of Law cum laude, where she served on the Villanova Law Review and is a member of the Order of the Coif. Ms. Murphy lives in West Chester, Pennsylvania, with her husband, horses, dogs and cats.
Ms. Murphy has published many articles on healthcare topics over the years, and was selected by the Delaware Today Magazine poll of 2001 as one of the Top Lawyers in Delaware in the area of health law.
Ms. Murphy is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and the Delaware Bar Association and is an affiliate member of the Delaware Medical Management Group Association. She is admitted to practice in Delaware and Pennsylvania.
